I have added new galleries of Sandsound and the visit of about 20
pilot whales to Lerwick Harbour in March.
17 May 2011
Sadly, the
long-finned pilot whale that
was apparently escorted, unwell and disorientated into Sullom Voe on
about 12 May finally beached itself late on 14 May and died in the
early hours of 15 May. The gallery shows its general appearance and
how close it was to the shore on the evening of 13 May and some of
the crowd that came to see it. Veterinary staff from the Scottish
Agricultural College in Inverness travelled north to undertake a
post mortem today to attempt to determine its condition, whether it
had been feeding and if it had any disease or injury that would have
contributed to its demise. See
SNH press release for full
details.
15 May 2011
To coincide with our visit to the Craft Market and Sunday Teas at
Symbister Hall today, I have uploaded a new gallery of
images of Whalsay from my visit
earlier in the week.
13 May 2011
Very sad news - a
long-finned pilot whale appears
unwell and disorientated in Garths Voe, at the head of Sullom Voe.
Gallery shows its general appearance and how close it is to the
shore and some of the crowd that came to see it this evening.

21 December 2010 Total Lunar Eclipse,
as seen from Trondra, Shetland. This was a fantastic event with
beautiful views in clear skies. With its snowy landscape and late
sunrise, Shetland had some of the best views in the UK. The eclipse
vwas visible from start through to totality and about mid-way
through totality towards the end before brightening daylight
overwhelmed the spectacle.
5 December 2010 We still have a few 2011 calendars left from
our most recent shipment - please contact us soon if you would like one.
In view of the continuing winter conditions and backlog of mail we
cannot guarantee delivery of any further orders before Christmas after
this stock is sold. For Shetland customers limited stocks remain at our

11 September 2010 Astro photography tools and tutorial
talk by Chris Brown at the Shetland Museum was a great success - we
even managed to get outside with cameras and tripods!
10 September 14:30 Apparently there's no sign of the
humpback whale today despite a search all morning. It's thought the
whale has either drowned or broken free and swum off - please let it
be the latter. News from BBC News: "Shetland humpback whale rescue
search called off" -
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-11256881
9 September 2010 A sad
whale's tale - some of our record photos of the humpback whale caught in
creels in Orra Wick, Lunning - shot in driving rain so poor quality I'm
afraid. Thought to be a fairly young animal hopes remain that a rescue
plan can be devised to release it from its entanglement, maybe as early
as tomorrow (10 September). Here's hoping for good weather.
28 August
and 4 September 2010 Unst Show and Farmers Market and Yell Show

9 August 2010 Nice article in last Saturday's
Financial
Times weekend magazine about trout fishing in Shetland titled "A
whole new angle" by Merryn Somerset Webb (author "Love is not
Enough", Editor Moneyweek) following a photo shoot we did of the
family going fishing over in Vementry a couple of weeks ago.

4 July 2010 Completely updated
stock images gallery launched - many of the old
favourites going back to 2004 are still there but we have added many
new images from 2009 and the first part of 2010 for the first time.
Most of these images are being added to our updated display stock
for sale at farmers markets, craft fairs etc and were first shown on
Victoria Pier for the Flavour of Shetland where they proved really
popular. Check out our new gallery
here.
29 June 2010 Finally managed to get our

The Shetland Classic Car Show saw a fantastic collection of old
cars, motorbikes, steam traction engines, models and other
attractions over the weekend and some of our images were published
as a collection to accompany the story over on
The Shetland News.
29 April 2010 Well, Shetland
Folk Festival is
now well and truly underway and we'll have photos on the site soon,
probably next week. In the mean time, if you didn't see Baskery today,
make it your business to do so soon - they're fantastic! They are
three sisters that have incredible vocals, are all highly talented
musicians and they make a really loud sound too!
12 April 2010 Just as we were updating the site on 11 April came
the news we'd been waiting for - Aurora! We abandoned all further
site update work and headed out, in the end for 5 hours - but what a
result, with spectacular aurora, both out in the country and in town
- despite all the light pollution! We said over on our blog that it was the
best aurora for 2 years but having examined the images and seen all
the colours that were present (albeit faintly) we now think it was
the best since 2006. We've uploaded a new gallery of the best images
taken on the night and are working on some time lapse movies for
upload over the next few days.
11 April
2010 This past month or so has been very busy finishing a
number of winter projects and looking forward to Spring and Summer.
We finished the
Mirrie Dancers
Winter Illuminations project, managed to bag some winter wildlife,
have done the odd portrait session and worked on some astronomical
images too. We made another donation to
CAMDA thanks to purchases from our travel
photographs in Mongolia in our
Ulaan Baatar
and
Bayan Ulgi Region,
western Mongolia collections.
16 March 2010
We
are carrying out a minor site upgrade
with site search and repositioning social media icons so expect some
inconsistency for a little while as we try out possible alternatives
- please feel free to let us have any comments on the new buttons
and boxes! Also, if there are any problems with sit search we'd be
pleased to hear of them. Thanks
15 March 2010 We have uploaded the
final galleries of images for the Mirrie Dancers
Winter Illuminations project - images at Longfield Chapel,
Dunrossness together with updated galleries for both the Burra sites,
at Duncansclate and Houss - see the final galleries at
Mirrie Dancers Winter Illuminations Galleries.
In preparation are our following time-lapse movies at Duncansclate
and Longfield as well as a proper DV video taken at Duncansclate.
16 February 2010 At last! We've uploaded the remaining galleries of Husky Photos - Classes E, E2, D, and D2 taken at the Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain Aviemore Sled dog rally at Aviemore. Thanks for your patience!
12 February 2010 There is an unfolding humanitarian disaster in Mongolia, which is suffering its worst dzud (summer drought followed by severe winter) since 2001, when 4 million livestock perished and many nomadic people lost their way of life or their lives. It is estimated that 20 million livestock could be lost this time. Half of aimags (provinces) have been declared disaster areas and loss of life is expected among herding communities. Read more about
it here: http://www.camda.org.uk/ and here: http://www.unicef.org/media/media_52759.html
Austin Taylor Photography visited Mongolia in 2008 and will donate 20% of the profit of all sales of any photos from our Mongolia collections during February and March 2010 to the Cambridge Mongolia Development Appeal (CAMDA).
You can view and buy our Mongolia photos here: Ulaan Baatar and Bayan Ulgi Region, western Mongolia
10 February 2010 We've uploaded the latest Mirrie Dancers Winter Illuminations at Duncansclate Croft House and Aald Haa, both at Burra to our Winter Illuminations Galleries and added the latest timelapse movie

18 July 2008 Did you see the best display of Noctilucent Clouds in Shetland since last year early this morning? If you missed them I have uploaded a few images so you can see what all the fuss was about.
5 July 2008 was a wonderfully sunny and warm day in Shetland - in fact it was the warmest day of the year so far here so I have celebrated by uploading some photos of Burra where my favourite beach is.
3 July 2008 - I'm delighted to be able to announce that another set of 10 of my photographs are now available to buy online at the Designed In Shetland website, making 20 in all. Also there you'll also find a wide range of Shetland art and craft type goods.
1 June 2008 An exhibition of my photographs is now on display at Islesburgh Community Centre, in Lerwick, Shetland. This is my first exhibition and it’s quite a big deal for me - by far the most difficult task was selecting which photos to show; and of course mounting and framing took a lot of effort and energy but I'm delighted with the results. All the photographs were created in Shetland and the exhibition is arranged in 4 mini themes of seals and puffins; landscapes; sky scenes; and things in the landscape. The exhibition runs from 1-28 June and I would be delighted to receive your feedback.
5 May 2008 I have uploaded an initial group of 2008 Shetland Folk Festival photos. These do not yet have any details of performers attached but I hope to add those details soon.
30 March 2008 I was lucky enough to photograph some astonishing atmospheric optical effects today - a sun halo, tangent arc, sun dogs and a sun pillar. Check out these images!
28 March 2008 There was a wonderful glow of Northern Lights (Aurora borealis) in Shetland last night and I've uploaded a few photos.
14 March 2008 My first entry to this year's Rural Gateway photo competition wasn't a winner but was picked for inclusion in the gallery for the first round.
14 February 2008 I've added many new images to my collection of Shetland Landscapes and captioned all the previously blank images in my general collection of Shetland Wildlife.
9 February 2008 I've uploaded a selection of my Up Helly-Aa 2008 photos. This year I've included a full selection of photos including last minute preparations, both the day and evening processions, shots of the Kirkwall City Pipe Band, the visit to the New Museum as well as the burning of the Galley Breckon and a few shots of the hall festivities. As well as all that I've also added images of the Junior squad and galley as well as their procession and burning. I hope you enjoy them.
7 February 2008 I'm pleased to say that I have now finished uploading images of the Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain's Aviemore Sled Dog Rally that took place in mid-January 2008 and have created an index page to all the galleries here.
27 January 2008 - I have simplified my pricing structure so that images are now priced as "Small", "Medium" and "Large" - and all these sizes fit standard, shop bought, mounts. As ever, if you have special requirements or a particular size in mind please contact me and I shall do my best to help.
26 January 2008 - I'm delighted to be able to announce that an initial set of 10 of my photographs are now available to buy online at the Designed In Shetland website, where you'll also find a wide range of Shetland art and craft type goods.
22 January 2008 - I have won the Rural Gateway Photo Competition 2007 with my "Up Helly Aa Light Up" photo! Needless to say I'm thrilled. This photo was the monthly winner for February that was then entered into the annual competition. As many of you will know, this year's Up Helly-Aa is imminent so I'll be looking to better this photo! Many thanks to everyone that voted for me.
December 2007 Well,
the Shetland
Arts and Crafts
Fair at the end of November was great fun and I met a lot of
people. Thanks to all of you that bought my photographs and
for all the very encouraging comments. It was very useful
indeed to get feedback on what people actually like, as opposed
to what I think might be popular!
December 2007 I
was very pleased that my noctilucent
cloud image
has been selected as the July image in the BBC's
Sky At Night Magazine Calendar
for 2008. I'm
expecting two other images of mine to appear in 2 other calendars
in the New Year as well but, as both are still being finalised,
you'll have to check back later for news of which ones thay are!
